Jamaica: Government provides $200 million to assist sugarcane farmers

St Thomas, Jamaica: In a good news to sugarcane farmers, the government will assist them with $200 million. Cane growers in St Thomas have been affected by the closure of the Golden Grove sugar mill.

Agriculture Minister Audley Shaw said, “We had initially asked for $ 50 million but eventually succeeded in getting approval of $200 million for sugarcane farmers.”

The funds are to be used for the planting of new crops, given that the demand for sugar cane has decreased. The cane cutters will also be benefitted from this, he said.

The Golden Grove sugar mill was closed in 2019 by manufacturing company Seprod, which took over the business in 2009 with the hope of reviving the ailing sugar operation.
