Japan grants 800 million yen worth of farm equipment to Filipino sugarcane farmers

The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the  (SRA) have received farm equipment valued at 800 million yen to benefit small sugarcane farmers in the Philippines through the Farm Mechanization Program for Small Sugarcane Landholders. The grant was officially handed over by the Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Kazuhiko Koshikawa in a ceremony at the SRA headquarters in Bacolod City on November 18, 2023, according to manilastandard.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, SRA Administrator Pablo Luis Azcona, and representatives from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao were present at the turnover ceremony. Secretary Laurel expressed gratitude for the 80 units of tractors, 48 units of sugarcane planters, 48 units of flail mowers, and 5 units of power harrow provided under the Japan Non-Project Aid Program.

During the ceremony, Laurel acknowledged the crucial role played by the DA in evaluating, approving, and monitoring the project’s progress. He highlighted how mechanization contributes to reducing hard labor, addressing labor shortages, and enhancing the efficiency and timeliness of agricultural operations.

Laurel also commended the SRA for its efforts in guiding the sugarcane industry towards increased production, particularly through support to small sugarcane farmers. He pledged to continue engaging with stakeholders, including the extensive DA bureaucracy, to fulfill President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s directive of lowering the prices of essential food items such as rice, sugar, meat, chicken, fish, and vegetables by boosting food production.

Drawing from his corporate ascent, Laurel emphasized his firsthand experience with the challenges faced by the agriculture sector. He stressed the importance of national and local authorities collaborating to address the pressing issues confronting Filipino farmers and underscored the need for effective solutions.

Expressing gratitude to the Japanese embassy officials, Laurel highlighted the assistance provided to sugar farmers through the partnership with the Japanese government. He stated that this collaboration facilitates addressing concerns through modernization and mechanization. Laurel noted the shared interests binding the two nations, emphasizing the growing trading partnership that brings prosperity and opportunities to citizens of both countries.
