Kalburgi, Karnataka: Sugarcane farmers have demanded the government should fix the procurement price of sugarcane to Rs 5000 per tonne, reports The Hindu.
Under the banner of Karnataka Pranth Raitha Sangha (KPRS), the farmers across the district launched a protest in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Kalaburagi carrying sugarcane along with them.
Sharanabasappa Mamshetty, KPRS leader said, the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) fixed by the centre is not sufficient to cover the cost of cultivation and the government should increase the FRP of cane to Rs 5000 per tonne for recovery of 9.5 per cent.
The farmers also demanded that the government should force mills to pay pending cane dues and share profits generated from the sale of ethanol and other byproducts.
