Kenya: 500 employees may lose jobs as mills face cane shortage

After the government imposed a ban on importation of sugarcane from Uganda, the Busia Sugar Industry Ltd has issued notices to 500 employees to fire them as it is facing cane shortage.

The factory officials stated that they are unable to operate as they are not getting enough supply of sugarcane for crushing. The factories were depending on the cane from Uganda to continue the cane crushing.

As per the order issued by the management to the factory workers, “Following the lack of the sugarcane for crushing, the management of Busia mill has decided to reduce the staff of the mill.”

Ali Taib, Managing Director of the mill has appealed to the government to revert the decision of banning the importation of sugarcane and has conveyed his message to Peter Munya, Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture.
