Kenya: Dispute over setting up new sugar mill

The Environment court granted permission to Busia Sugar Industries to set up a sugar factory in Busia overruling the objections made by the West Kenya Sugar factory.

Both millers are fighting oversupply of the sugarcane from the region and the West Kenya Sugar factory objected that constructing another mill will affect its operations.

According to the local media report, Tajveer Singh Rai, managing director, West Kenya told the court in an affidavit that the Busia sugar has disobeyed the court orders by getting manufacturing licence. The allegations were rejected by the Busia Sugar and the agricultural board.
