Kenya: Order to close Kibos Sugar Company

Kisumu, Kerala: Initiating action against the Kibos and Allied Sugar Company in Kisumu County over pollution, the National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) ordered the closure of all its operations. The order includes closure of distillery, paper plant, gas plant and a sugar mill.

The action has been taken after the company defied air quality regulations of 2014, said the Nema officials.

Mamo Boru Mamo, Director-General, Nema said, “The ambient air quality monitoring in the mill premises showed a very high concentration of particulate matter (PM) that was above the national air quality standard of PM10. Kibo’s emission was more than five times the internationally accepted standard of 50 micrometres which is 245 micrometres.”

The factory has been given 30 days from February 5 to install the system to curb pollution but could not comply.
