Kenya: Privatization of sugar mills would benefit sugarcane farmers

Privatization of five sugar mills from western Kenya region would benefit the sugarcane farmers. The sugar mills are located in the sugar belt area of Western Kenya region and the government has expressed confidence that the privatization of these mills would increase the efficiency of the mills and this would help cane farmers earn more profit than earlier.

The top management from the region noted that due to the mismanagement, the sector witnessed poor performance. With the privatization, more money would be injected in the sector, which will help to uplift the sugar industry in the country.

It was also noted that the cane farmers were facing problems due to bad road condition and the limited number of tractors to ferry sugarcane from fields to the sugar mills. For improving the cane delivery from cane fields to mill, the West Kenya Sugar Mill has purchased 18 tractors.
