Kenya Revenue Authority seizes illegal sugar

Six persons were arrested by Kenya Revenue Authority for allegedly being involved in sugar smuggling. The authorities have seized 550 bags of smuggled sugar worth KES2 million (US$18,379) in Bungoma on the Ugandan border.

The seized sugar is Lugazi branded sugar which is believed to be smuggled from Uganda. The suspects have been smuggling and repacking the sugar violating the East African Community Customs Management Act.

According to the media report, a total of 117 bags of sugar packed in Butali Sugar Mills Ltd bags were found in one of the suspect’s shop. The empty bags and other material used in smuggling were also recovered from them. The accused will be presented before the court on October 30.
