Kenya: Sugar imports increase by 23 per cent despite increase in domestic output

Despite a slight increase in domestic sugar production, the sugar import for the first four months rose by 23 per cent as compared with the same period during last year.

As per the statistics from the Sugar Directorate, the sugar imported during the first four months in 2020 were 1, 84,677 tonnes as against 1, 50,302 tonnes in 2019.

The supply of raw material helped in increasing 13% sugar production at a domestic level. All the private sugar mills except Olepito have improved sugar productivity during the considered period.
