Kenya: Sugarcane farmers suffer losses after heavy rains

Kenya: Heavy rains have disrupted the harvesting and transportation activities of the sugarcane from the Busia area increasing the losses of sugarcane cultivators.

The farmers from sub-countries of Nambale, Malaba and Funyula who deliver their crops to Busia sugar mill are mostly affected due to the heavy rainfall.

The incessant rainfall continues for two weeks that has damaged the roads connecting the sugar mill with the sugarcane fields. The water has entered in the cane fields and the crops are submerged underwater.

According to the media report, Stephen Mula, communication officer, Busia Sugar Company said, “The continuous rainfall has affected the operations of the company. The sugarcane fields are located at low-lying areas making it difficult for tractors to reach there and procure cane.”
