Kenya to privatise sugar mills

Nairobi: As a revival plan of the sugar sector, Kenya will privatise sugar factories and impose an additional tax, informed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s office.

According to industry experts, the ailing machinery, poor funding and the high cost of production are the problems which the sugar sector is facing in the country. The recommendations made by the task force set up to the revival of the sector will be fully implemented, said the statement. The task force has recommended the introduction of levy along with changing sugar import rules.

“The sugar levy will be charged on consumers so as to raise the revenue needed to assist farmers to develop their sugarcane crop,” Kenyatta’s office said.
