Nairobi: Two-day workers’ strike of workers that halted the operations of the sugar mill has led to the loss of Sh20 million, said Gabriel Nyangueso, Managing Director, Chemilil Sugar, reports local media.
The sugar mill produces 1,500 tonnes of sugar every day which costs around Sh10 million.
“The two-day strike has halted all the operations, increasing our losses,” he further added.
Sugarcane carrying trucks were lined up almost two kilometres as the workers stayed away from work. They were demanding the removal of the MD and the head of finance.
The workers’ strike initially revolved around pending salary but later shifted to the removal of Nyangueso.
The strike is affecting the farmers, transporters and management, he said.
The MD states that the strike is going against the directive issued by the Ministry of Agriculture. It had last week announced an immediate appointment of directors to manage and run the company.
