Kenya’s ban on sugar importation affects Ugandan traders and sugarcane farmers

Kenya: Sugarcane farmers and traders from Uganda have stated that Kenya’s ban on the importation of sugar from Uganda is impacting them leading to financial losses.

Taking a step to protect the domestic sugar sector and cane farmers from, Peter Munya, Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture imposed a ban on importation of sugarcane and sugar from Uganda.

A farmer from Uganda said, “We grow sugarcane hoping to sell it to Kenya. But with the ban on sending cane, our cane has dried up in the field incurring our losses.”

The decision has also affected traders and farmers from Kenya
Busia Sugar Industry, a major importer of Uganda is facing a shortage of raw material and has reduced sugar production risking jobs of 200 workers.
