Kerala may purchase rice from Andhra to control price rise

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala government has decided to purchase rice from Andhra to keep a check on the rising prices of the commodity in the state.

According to the media report, G R Anil, minister of foods and civil supplies said that the state government will discuss the issue with the Andhra government.

The prices of rice have increased by Rs 15 per kg in one month. The prices most used variety, variety and Jaya variety, have been increased from Rs 10 to Rs 15 in one month.

The traders have signalled that there is little chance of lowering the prices of rice in the next three months. They have stated that the 5% GST on branded rice is one of the major reasons for the hike in prices of the commodity.

The rice mill owners have stated that they are not getting rice though the harvesting season in Karnataka has kick-started. Once the harvested rice from Andhra enters the market, prices may get lower in the market.
