Keyna: Mumias Sugar Company shuts ethanol production unit due to supply shortage

According to the local media reports, the shortage of molasses supply has led the Mumias Sugar Company to shut its ethanol production unit. The mill was facing shortage from the last one month and has closed the production in the factory and sent 800 workers home in April.

According to the management officials at the Mumias, the receiver-manager Ponangipalli Venkata Ramana Raoto’s plans seem to have fallen and not yielded good results.

In September 2019, he was appointed by Kenya Commercial Bank as a step to revive the mill but he has last visited the mill in March 2020.
Private sugar millers have been competing for available mature cane, leading to conflicts and shortage of raw material for the region’s factories.
