Kharif crop sowing crosses 1,102 lakh hectares

New Delhi: Farmers in India have sown Kharif crops across 1,102.99 lakh hectares so far this year (September 22), as against 1,099.23 lakh hectares in the same period of last year, according to the latest data from the Agriculture Ministry.

Sugarcane farmers have so far sown crops across 59.91 lakh hectares, as against 55.65 lakh hectares last year, the ministry data showed.

The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare has released the progress of area coverage under kharif crops as of 22nd September 2023, as follows:

India has three cropping seasons — Summer, Kharif, and Rabi.

Crops that are sown during October and November and the produce harvested from January depending on maturity are Rabi. Crops sown during June-July and dependent on monsoon rains are harvested in October-November are kharif. Crops produced between Rabi and Kharif are Summer crops.
