Kolhapur: Farmers stage protest to demand pending payment for sugarcane

Kolhapur: Activists from the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, a farmers’ organization, orchestrated a “Dhol Bajao Andolan” (Drum Beat Protest) within the premises of sugar factories located in Kolhapur and Sangli districts. The demonstration aimed to exert pressure on millers to disburse Rs 400 per tonne for the sugarcane harvested during the previous season, reported The Times of India.

Savkar Madnaik, a prominent leader of the organization, explained, “The Dhol Bajao Andolan was organized to reiterate our demand. Our objective is to prompt millers to declare their intent to pay, and subsequently, to fulfill these payments before the Dasara festival.”

Sourabh Shetti, son of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana’s leader Raju Shetti, spearheaded the protest in Jaysingpur. He stressed that millers had enjoyed significant profits during the last season, and it was only just that farmers should benefit from this windfall as well.
