Lack of workers affect cane harvesting in Marayur

Idukki, Kerala: Sugarcane fields in Marayur have not been harvested yet due to a shortage of labourers.

Every year the workers from Tamil Nadu migrate to the Marayur during cane harvesting season but this year they refrained to travel due to several reasons including coronavirus pandemic, said farmers.

The region has received a geographical indication (GI) tag and jaggery production is the household business in Marayur. Three agencies namely Marayur Karimpulpadaka Vipanana Sanghom, Mapco (Marayur Agriculture Producer Company) and Mhads (Marayur Hills Agricultural Development Society) are entrusted with rights to sell jaggery with the brand name ‘Marayur Jaggery’.

Selvin Marappan, chief of Mapco said that the government has not yet considered their demand of including jaggery in the Onam kit.
