Lebanon urges Algeria to exempt it from sugar export ban

Lebanon has urged Algeria to exempt it from the sugar export ban and to consider the possibility of continuing sugar supplies to the country, reports local media.

Najib Mikati, Prime Minister of Lebanon, met the Algerian foreign minister in Doha and requested the Algerian government to exempt his country from the sugar export ban.

The Algerian government two weeks ago imposed a ban on the export of sugar and other food items due to the food crisis owing to the Russia-Ukraine war.

A statement issued by the Presidency stated that the government has decided to prevent the export of all consumer products imported by Algeria, such as sugar, pasta, oil, semolina, and all wheat derivatives, assigning the Minister of Justice to prepare a draft law criminalizing the export of materials, not produced locally, as an act disruptive to the national economy

Lebanon is hit by an economic crisis and facing a shortage of food items. It mainly imports several commodities including sugar from Algeria.
