Madurai MP urges CM to start operations at National Cooperative Sugar Mill

Madurai: Sugarcane farmers continue their agitation in Alanganallur demanding the reopening of the National Co-operative Sugar Mill. Taking note of this, Madurai MP Su Venkatesan has urged the chief minister M K Stalin to take immediate steps to revive the sugar mill for the 2021-22 crushing season.

According to the news report published in The Times of India, this is the only co-operative sugar mill that is catering for the needs of the sugarcane farmers from the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. The sugarcane farmers have launched an indefinite strike demanding the revival of the mill and Rs 10 crore for maintenance work and resume crushing operations. The farmers have been agitating for the last 13 days. The mill has stopped operations for the last two years.

“The CM should take steps to revive the sugar mill as the livelihood of thousands of cane farmers and workers depends on the mill,” he further added.
