Madurai: Sugarcane farmers launch protest for revival of sugar mill

Madurai: Sugarcane farmers under banner of the Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers Association launched protest demanding the revival of the National Co-operative Sugar Mills located at Alanganallur in Madurai. The mill is not in operations for the last two years.

The farmers submitted the memorandum of their demands addressed to the chief minister M K Stalin to the district collector S Aneesh Sekhar.

The petition of the farmers states, “The sugarcane grown in 1,850 acres of area was registered with the sugar mill for 2021-22 crushing season. And 60,000 tonnes of sugarcane is in the area of the mill. Further, farmers are also ready to provide 15,000 tonne of sugarcane that are not registered for crushing. In addition to this to run the sugar mill without interruption around 50,000 tonne of sugarcane from Dharani Sugar Mills located in Vasudevanallur can be diverted to this mill.”
