Beed: District collector Radhabinod Sharma Administration has appealed to farmers that administration is taking steps to ensure crushing of all standing sugarcane crop and farmers should not commit suicide.
Sharma was speaking after he met the family members of farmer Namdev Asaram Jadhav (30) who committed suicide by hanging from a tree after burning cane grown in his two-acre field on May 11.
According to the police officials, the family members of the deceased farmer said that he was worried as the cane grown in the field was drying as it had not been harvested. Fearing the possible loss he took the extreme steps, the family members said.
Maharashtra, mainly Marathwada region, has witnessed excess sugarcane production this season.
Recently, Maharashtra government had announced subsidies to the sugar mills to crush excess sugarcane grown in the state for the ongoing season.
