Make sufficient dollars available for food imports: Bangladesh PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the officials to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) to ensure the smooth operations of industries in the country. She was speaking in a meeting with senior bureaucrats at Ganabhaban on Sunday.

She said, “Bangladesh Bank needs to make sufficient dollars available to banks to open letters of credit (LCs) for the private sector to import food and various consumer goods, including wheat, sugar, oil, complementing the government’s own food imports.”

Sugar refineries have reduced refining due to a lack of gas which has resulted in sugar shortrage in the market, said Jashim Uddin, president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI). The refineries have cut production by 34 per cent.

According to government officials, importing fuel will help the industries start operations that will help in lowering food inflation.
