Malaysia to investigate alleged abuse of sugar import 

Amid reports of approved permits (AP) abuse, Malaysia’s Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry will investigate the same for sugar import.

There were news reports that imported sugar could be obtained online. Following which, Deputy minister Chong Chien Jen said strict action would be taken against those who have abused the APs. The AP for the import of sugar is only issued to manufacturers of food and beverage products.

Recently, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs has approved eight permits to import sugar from other countries.

Jen claimed, so far, we have not received any reports on the misuse of APs issued by the ministry.

Also following the approval of sugar import, the country witnessed hue and cry as it was alleged that decision was made without fully understanding the circumstances of the industry.
