Mathura farmers expect new minister will take steps to revive district’s only sugar mill

Agra: Sugarcane farmers from Mathura are expecting the revival of the only sugar mill in the district as Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary, MLA from the constituency has become the minister for sugarcane development and sugar mills in the Uttar Pradesh government, reports The Times of India.

The sugar mill is not under operation since 2008. The mill, set up in 1978 by MLA Babu Tejpal Singh, is spread over 100 acres and has a crushing capacity of 1,250 tonnes per day, and is located on NH-2.

According to the news report published in The Times of India, minister said,“Our priority is to ensure that the sugarcane farmers get a good price for their produce. We will conduct meetings in this regard and initiate the process of reopening the mill soon,”

Thakur Chandrapal Singh, president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union, Chhata said, “Similar promises were made to farmers in 2017 but this time we hope for the revival of the sugar mill as the local MLA has been given charge of sugarcane development and mills. If he fails to act, we would launch a protest before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.”

More than 50,000 farmers associated with the sugar mill are expecting the reopening of the mill, said Thakur Murari Singh, vice-president of the Mathura Ganna Samiti.
