Nayagarh sugar mill opened for assessment

Nayagarh: The sugar mill at Panipoila that was shut in 2015 was opened on Thursday for maintenance work and will prepare the report on making it operational again.

The gates of the mill were opened in presence of Collector Poma Tudu, Sub-collector Lagnajit Rout and tehsildar Bhikari and the assessment of the condition of sugar mill began by a two-member technical team.
Nayagarh, built-in 1988 with the cost of Rs 18 crore was once known for its high-quality sugarcane yields and was strategically located 5 km away from Nayagarh town.

Recently, with a demand to revive the mill, farmers and mill workers under the banner of Nayagarh Sugar Mill Kriyanusthan staged a demonstration in Nayagarh. The farmers and workers have been staging agitation since January demanding reopening of NSCL. Apart from reviving the mill, the other demand of the agitators were payment of arrears of farmers and workers.
