Nepal: Mahalaxmi Sugar Mill shuts operations without paying cane dues

Sarlahi: The Mahalakshmi Sugar Mill has closed down its operations for this season without paying cane dues to the farmers. The mill is located in Godaita town in the Southern part of Sarlahi.

Birendra Kumar Srivastav, administrative manager of the mill said that the mill closed operations after crushing 890,000 quintals of sugarcane. The mill had begun operations on December 20.

The farmers have stated that they have not received cane dues from the mill except for the cane dues for the first five days.

We are sorting out the issues and will soon clear the cane dues of the farmers, said Srivastav.

Devendra Yadav, Godaita Municipality Mayor said that the farmers will launch an agitation for their cane dues if the mill fails to clear their dues.

The factory has bought sugarcane from India and it has money to buy sugarcane from India but not to clear farmers’ dues, he said.
