No improvement in water reservoir levels across the country; Maharashtra, UP report less water level than previous year

The Central Water Commission (CWC) in its latest water reservoir report of 2nd May 2024 shows that the total water storage across the 150 reservoirs in the country is 50.432 BCM, which is 28% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. Last year the live storage available in these reservoirs for the corresponding period was 62.212 BCM, hence the overall water availability is less than the corresponding period last year.

The Eastern regions continue to fare better in terms of water availability in the reservoirs. The total water available is 7.451 BCM which is 36% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 33%.

All other regions- Northern, Western, Central and Southern are reporting less water availability in the reservoirs than in the corresponding period last year. In the Northern region, the total water available is 6.051 BCM which is 31% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 37%.

In the Western region, water available in 49 reservoirs under CWC monitoring is 11.081 BCM which is 29.8 % of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs vs 36% in the corresponding period last year.

In the Central region, water available in 26 reservoirs is 17.496 BCM which is 36% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 42%.

In the Southern region, water available is 8.353 BCM which is 16% of the total live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the corresponding period of last year was 28%.

State-wise, Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Nagaland, Gujarat and Kerala have better water storage than last year for the corresponding period. Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Rajasthan, Bihar, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have less water in the reservoirs than last year.
