No issue with sugar supply in Malaysia

Johor Baru: There are sufficient sugar stocks in the country and the government’s decision to approve 37 companies to import sugar has nothing to do with the supply of sugar, said, Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, reports The Star.

“The ministry in the past had issued licenses to the companies that wanted to sell (sugar) to the industry,” said the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister stating that this was an ordinary step to allow importation of sugar.

The government has approved 37 companies to import 285,700 tonnes of refined white sugar this year. In a statement on Friday (July 14), the ministry said that the approval was a proactive step to ensure stability in the supply of sugar by facilitating the Approved Permit (AP) process for importing refined white sugar.

“The price of sugar is at RM 2.85 per kg for coarse sugar and RM2.95 per kg for fine sugar,” he said after launching the Payung Rahman initiative at a mall in Johor Baru.

“We do not have any sugar crisis of sugar and we will address it if we receive any complaints regarding the shortage of sugar in the country,” he said.
