No shortage of sugar in Fiji, says FCCC

Sugar stock is available in Fiji and the only problem is the slowing of restocking by the supermarkets, said the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) chief executive officer Joel Abraham.

He issued a statement a few days ago stating that the commission has received several complaints from consumers based in Western and Central divisions regarding a shortage of sugar since lockdown came into effect.

“Based on consumers’ complaints that they were getting limited sugar due to lower supply, special teams were deployed to supermarkets to verify their claims,” he said.

He said a meeting was held with the plant manager of the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) who advised that sugar was available and traders experiencing a shortage in supply for restocking were to contact him for assistance. Ben’s Trading in Navua has received 4 tonne on April 27 and Lavuka will deliver sugar today.

The shortage of sugar in the local market is due to an increase in the sugar demand, said FSC.
