There is no sugar shortage in the country and has enough sugar available in the market for consumers, said the Fiji Sugar Corporation.
Sachin Deo, commercial officer, Fiji Sugar Corporation said the sales team of the company is in touch with the merchants to ensure a sufficient supply of sugar in the market.
Seema Shandil, Chief Executive Officer of Consumer Council said that the consumers have complained of sugar shortage in the supermarkets.
She said, “Through market surveillance and consumer complaints during the initial phase of the current outbreak, the council had discovered that there was a shortage of sugar in supermarkets.”
The current Covid-19 situation has created panic leading to the increase in sugar buying and hoarding of the commodity, she said.
“The supply of sugar has begun to normalize now”, she further added.
