Only 10 sugar mills are operating in Maharashtra

Kolhapur: Many sugar mills across India have shut their crushing operations. In Karnataka, all 63 sugar mills have closed their operations. Whereas in two major sugarcane producing states Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, mills are still operating.

Speaking about Maharashtra, then according to ISMA, 136 mills have already closed their crushing operations and only 10 sugar mills are operating in the state. So far state in the state till April 15, mills have produced 60.12 lakh tonnes of sugar, whereas, in last year same period, 106.71 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced. Overall 146 sugar mills, which includes 67 private sugar mills and 79 cooperative sugar mills, participated in the crushing season 2019-20 in Maharashtra.

As per reports, sugar mills are making all efforts to ensure that they crush all available sugarcane so that farmers do not have to suffer. Wherever there is any availability of sugarcane, mills are operating in those areas.

Speaking about the country’s sugar production, then according to the ISMA, till April 15, 232.74 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced.
