Orissa: Demand to revive Bijayananda sugar mill

Deogaon, Orissa: The sit-in agitation of sugarcane farmers along with the locals and members of the Villagers’ India Party (VIP) and activists of the Adivasi Adharkar Mahasangh is going from last 42 days near the gates of the Bijayananda Co-operative Sugar Mills at Deogaon in Bolangir demanding the revival of the sugar mill.

According to the news report published in orissapost.com, Bipin Kusulia, president of the party said, “The sugar mill has stopped operations since 2014. Despite our sit-in agitation the district administration has not paid attention to our demand of revival of the sugar mill.”

“We will intensify our agitation if the government fails to accept our demand. We are conducting meetings in the villages nearby the sugar mill to garner the support of farmers,” he said.

Thousands of sugarcane farmers, their families, mill employees, transporters, cane harvesters and traders from Sonepur, Bolangir, Boudh and Nuapada districts were earning their living from the sugar mill, he further added.
