Pakistan: Court grants permission to Prime Minister to exempt from appearing in sugar scam

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sheriff’s request for a permanent exemption from appearing in the Ramzan Sugar Mills scam has been accepted by an Accountability Court in Lahore.

In 2019, the National Accountability Bureau filed a case against Shehbaz and his son Hamza Shehbaz over charges of fraud and dishonesty which led to the loss of Rs 213 million to the nation.

Shehbaz had ordered to construct a drain in Chiniot district to benefit sugar mills owned by his sons when he was chief minister of Punjab, according to NAB.

He was arrested by NAB in 2019 but was released by Lahore High Court later.
