Pakistan: FIA seeks records from Afghanistan to probe fake sugar exports

Islamabad: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of Pakistan is seeking records from Afghanistan to probe fake sugar exports. The agency has sent a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to seek data from Kabul authorities regarding the imports of sugar from Pakistan for inland consumption in Afghanistan maintained by the Kabul authorities for the financial year 2014-15 and 2019-20, reported Arynews.

The FIA has also asked Afghan authorities to verify the genuineness of the list of importers.

This latest action is part of the FIA’s investigation into fake sugar exports from Pakistan to Afghanistan and Central Asian Republics, which was identified by an inquiry commission.

Earlier in July, the federal cabinet had approved the constitution of an 11-member investigation team headed by the director of FIA Islamabad Zone Moeen Masood for taking legal actions against the fake sugar exports on the recommendations of the inquiry commission.

The FIA’s investigation is expected to shed light on the extent of the fake sugar exports and identify the individuals and companies involved in this illegal activity.
