Pakistan government allows sugar import

Islamabad: The Pakistan government on Tuesday allowed import of 3 lakh tonnes of sugar. The Economic Coordination Committee has given nod for the same.

A press release issued by the Finance Ministry said, “The ECC considered a proposal by the Ministry of Industries and Production for import of refined sugar by the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) to maintain buffer stocks, and allowed import of up of up to 300,000 metric tonnes of white sugar.”

Pakistan is grappling with the shortage of sugar due to which the prices have risen by 22 per cent in seven months. Earlier, the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) had urged the government to import 3,00,000 tonnes of sugar as strategic reserves for August to October.
