Pakistan issues new international tender to purchase sugar

Hamburg: According to Reuters, Pakistan has issued a new international tender to purchase 100,000 tonnes of white sugar. The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) issued the tender stating the deadline for submission of price offers is June 25.

TCP wants the shipment of the first 25,000 tonnes in only 15 days plus voyage time after contract award and the rest following weekly in stages.

The news report states that the tender participants must offer the full 100,000 tonnes from the worldwide origins packed in bags.

Pakistan government in 2020 had approved the import of sugar to meet the domestic shortage. The country has issued a series of tenders to purchase sugar in past months but it has not made any purchase in the last tender for 50,000 tonnes.

Recently, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province had initiated a probe into a mega sugar export scandal in which sugar mill owners exported less sugar from their allotted quota to Afghanistan and sold it in Pakistan, leading to a huge loss to the national exchequer.
