Pakistan: Sugar prices cross Rs 100 per kg in 16 major cities

Lahore: Pakistan is reeling under high sugar prices. According to the statistics department, in major cities of the country prices crossed Rs 100 per kg.

As per the department, the prices increased by Rs 5 kg in Lahore and Bahawalpur while Rs 4 per kg in Sargodha, Bannu and Sukkur. Prices of sugar have crossed Rs 100 in all the major 16 cities.

The sugar prices in Islamabad and Karachi are expensive compared with other cities in the country and the residents of these cities are left with no option but to buy expensive sugar.

In the recent past, Pakistan had issued many international tenders to purchase sugar. The country in 2020 had approved the import of sugar to meet the domestic shortage.

Recently, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province had initiated a probe into a mega sugar export scandal in which sugar mill owners exported less sugar from their allotted quota to Afghanistan and sold it in Pakistan, leading to a huge loss to the national exchequer.
