Pakistan: Sugar stock of 1.2 million tonnes available ahead of next crushing season

Lahore: Around 1.2 million tonnes of excess sugar will be available at the beginning of the next crushing season in the country, said a Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) spokesman citing the statistics of the Federal Board of Revenue of July.

During the end of the last crushing season the sugar mills had produced two million tonnes of surplus sugar, he said. It was expected that there would be a 10% increase in the next sugarcane crop and the recent favourable rainfall has created a positive impact on the crop, he added.

If the government fails to take a timely decision regarding exporting sugar it would affect the farmers adversely as there is likely to be 1.5 to 2 million tonnes of surplus sugar for the next season, the spokesperson said.
