Pakistan to import more sugar

Islamabad: Pakistan will import 0.6 million Metric Tons (MMT) of sugar to maintain the strategic reserves. The Government had earlier decided to import 0.5 MMT sugar. The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) will be importing sugar.

According to the news report published in Brecorder.com, the government has decided to increase the quantity of sugar to be imported to maintain the strategic reserve, modifying the decision of ECC taken on January 20, 2021.

Pakistan is reeling under high sugar prices. According to the statistics department, in major cities of the country prices crossed Rs 100 per kg. In the recent past, Pakistan had issued many international tenders to purchase sugar. The country in 2020 had approved the import of sugar to meet the domestic shortage.
