Philippines: Demand to give smuggled sugar to poor families

Questioning the Philippines government’s decision to sell seized 4,000 metric tons of sugar, Sen. Risa Hontiveros said the government should instead give the smuggled sugar to poor families and calamity victims through the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

The Sugar Regulatory Administration has decided to sell the smuggled sugar seized by the Bureau of Customs.

Government should not earn profit from something illegal, she said. Accepting smuggled sugar is not a solution to address rising sugar prices, she said.
