Philippines: SRA requests Department of Labor and Employment to release the production share of sugar workers

Manila: Sugarcane crushing season in the Philippines is round the corner but the sugar workers have not received their pending dues of the last crushing season. Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) urged Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to immediately release the production share of sugar workers that fall under the Binalbagan Sugar Company (BISCOM) milling district in Negros Occidental. It is estimated at PHP200 million or more.

SRA Board Member, Atty. Emilio Yulo said, “Republic Act No. 809 rule provides three per cent direct share to farm labourers from the total production in the milling district. The amount is usually paid to workers in June at the time of school opening. However the school openings have been delayed, and this doesn’t mean to release the funds later than usual.”

“The clearing of funds will relieve these workers as they are financially reeling under pressure due to coronavirus pandemic,” he further added.
