Philippines sugar cannot compete with Thai sugar: SRA

Manila: Sugar produced in the Philippines cannot compete with the cheaper supply of sugar from Thailand, said the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA), reports CNNPhilippines

Speaking about the cost of sugar production in the country, at the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) budget hearing on Wednesday, SRA Administrator David John Thaddeus Alba told Sen. Cynthia Villar, “We cannot compete with Thailand.”

The cost of producing refined sugar is around P57 to P58 per kg excluding the other expenses required to bring it to the markets, he said. Whereas the sugar imported from Thailand costs P54 per kg.
