Sugar prices continue to rise in Manila. Refined sugar increased to record-high of P126 per kilogram after delay of importing 300,000 metric tons (MT) of sweetener.
As per the monitoring report of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA), the price of refined sugar in Metro Manila supermarkets ranged from P86.55 per kg low to P126 per kg high in the week ending August 12.
The sugar prices rose after President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr. recalled the infamous Sugar Order (SO) 4 declaring it “illegal” and “unauthorized”.
For the first time, the sugar prices broke the P125 per kg level over the lower production and depleting stocks.
According to the SRA monitoring reports, the average price of refined sugar in Metro Manila supermarkets is now P99.27 per kg.
The hike in price is affecting the consumers and President Marcos has repeatedly stated that his priority is to bring down prices of the sweetener at grocery and store levels.
