Philippines: Sugarcane milling at Bomedco not profitable anymore, say farmers

Manila : Sugarcane milling at the oldest and only sugar mill, Bogo-Medellin Milling Company Inc at Cebu is not profitable anymore, said a group of farmers.

The cane planters are milling their cane in the neighboring province at Negros Occidental since 2022-23, said Al Lim, president of the Bogo-Medellin sugarcane planters association.

The operational insufficiency at Bomedco has severed the relationship between the Millers and farmers, he said.

Lim has stated that the mill is not capable of operating to full to its capacity while the mill administration has cited the reason for less availability of cane for crushing for shut down.

Bomedco has assured that measures have been taken to ensure that there is a supply of sufficient cane for crushing.

Lim said that the farmers are getting more profits by sending their cane to the neighboring provinces for crushing.
