Philippines to resolve sugar supply shortage issue soon

Bacolod City: The Department of Agriculture and the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) will resolve the commodity shortage issue soon, said Aurelio Gerardo Valderrama Jr, the representative of the sugar planters on the board, reports local media.

The sugar prices in the country have soared to PHP 100 per kilo due to restricted supply.

The President last week appointed Valderrama, president of the Vicmico Planters Association, Inc. and director of the Confederation of Sugar Producers Association inc.

He said, “The increased prices of fertilizers and fuel are some of the factors behind skyrocketed sugar cost. I will work towards the unification of a common goal as a planters’ representative.”

“The industry must work towards the protection of small sugar producers and we must ensure that the greater majority of the industry benefits from our work,” Valderrama further added.
