Pilibhit farmers demand pending cane dues

Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh: Amid sugar mills closing operations in the district, farmers have alleged that they have not received cane dues of Rs 399.20 crore, reports The Times of India.

Out of four sugar mills, three have closed their operations. Two sugar mills belong to the private sector and two belong to the UP cooperative sugar mill federation.

According to the media report, Barkhera-based Bajaj mill owes the highest dues.

The mill closed operations on March 26 after farmers stopped supplying cane to the mill.

Manjit Singh, district president of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) said, “The government has failed to abide by its promise to pay interest on late payment of cane price as per the UP Sugarcane (Regulation of Supply and Purchase) Act.”
