Pilibhit sugar mills owe around Rs 551 crore to cane growers

Pilibhit: It is a challenging time for the sugar mills across India as they are already sitting with surplus sugar as due to lockdown their sugar sales also severely affected. Mills in the Uttar Pradesh produced record sugar production, but coronavirus has impacted the sugar industry in India. And sugar mills are finding it difficult to sustain as sugar sales are down, which has created liquidity problem for them. Therefore they are unable to clear cane dues.

Sugarcane crushing is in the last phase in Uttar Pradesh. And according to the news report published in The Times of India, two private and two cooperative sugar mills in Pilibhit owe farmers dues to the tune of Rs 551.80 crore for this crushing season.

The demand for sugar has been reduced as the industries like cold drinks, ice cream, bakeries and sweet shops are shut due to lockdown. As sales are down, sugar stocks are piling up in warehouses. And also sugar mills are unable to clear cane payment due to financial scarcity.
