Puducherry: Cyclone damages sugarcane and other crops

Puducherry has recorded damage of sugarcane grown over 170 hectares along with other crops. The government would demand initial interim Central assistance of Rs 50 crore for post-cyclone reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Addressing a press conference after conducting a meeting of the Puducherry Disaster Management Authority, state’s Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy said, “The preliminary estimates suggest that the initial damage due to the cyclone is around Rs 400 crore.”

“We are in the process of tabulating these losses, including loss of industrial production and damage to infrastructure, before we present a case for a comprehensive aid package to the Centre,” he further added.

More than 170 ha of sugarcane crops have been damaged due to the cyclone.
