Punjab: CM orders assessment of damaged wheat crop

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has issued orders to assess the damaged wheat crop in the state due to unseasonal rain, reports The Hindustan Times.

Over 4 lakh hectares of area under cultivation has suffered damaged as per the preliminary report prepared by the agriculture department.
Most affected districts were Patiala, Moga, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Barnala, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib and Ludhiana.

An officer attached to the state agriculture department said, “Severe rainfall and the scattered showers on Monday damaged the crop. Wind accompanied with the rain increased the damage to the crops.”

Wheat grown in the abi season is standing in the fields and is at the maturity stage. The crop is grown on over 34.90 lakh hectares and is ready to be harvested within two to three weeks and the rainfall is likely to delay the harvest.
